Riding along the gauchos' pack-horse trails through the breathtakingly wild landscape of the Patagonian Andes. Small groups, well-trained horses
Location
Latin America › Argentina › All Regions
Rincon de Lobos, a small valley in Northern Patagonia, nestled in the foothills of the Argentine Andes. Here, gauchos are your neighbors and expert guides through the wilderness of the far south.
Our tours take you into the vast, virtually uninhabited watershed of the Río Turbió, which is fed by four glaciers. This region, covering approximately 1,000 km², is cut off from the rest of the world and accessible only by boat or via mule trails that gauchos have used for generations to drive their cattle. The riding route for the next 10 days is divided into two main stages. On one hand, it leads to the turquoise-blue Lago Esperanza, 500 meters above sea level, on the border with Chile within the private nature reserve of the same name. On the other hand, it leads to Cerro Plataforma, a geological phenomenon where, as a result of volcanic processes 50 to 30 million years ago, the seabed was thrust upward to form a vast, fossil-strewn high plateau (approx. 1,700 meters above sea level).

Excursions: The Comarca Andina—as the region at 42° south latitude surrounding the small Argentine towns of El Bolsón, Lago Puelo, Cholila, and Trevelin is known—is an insider’s tip for visitors to Patagonia: In terms of natural experiences, it’s on par with destinations such as the well-known “El Chalten,” yet it offers the advantages of more stable weather and a rich cultural scene shaped by the pioneering spirit of Patagonia’s settlement history. An extensive network of hiking trails leads visitors through the unspoiled landscape of mountains, lakes, lagoons, and vast forests all the way to the glaciers on the Chilean border, and the region is rightly considered a paradise for trekking and horseback riding in Argentina. The Comarca Andina is also centrally located, making it ideal for combining with tours of the Valdés Peninsula, Tierra del Fuego, Mendoza, or Chile.
