Additional information about the area

Excursions: Definitely the most “German” of all Namibian cities—the coastal town of Swakopmund—is a three-hour drive from Gross-Okandjou. Etosha National Park is also a must-see. All of Africa’s animals are gathered in one vast area and can be admired in the evenings at illuminated watering holes. During the day, you’re allowed to drive your own car through the park and observe wildlife. You can almost always spot elephants. Etosha National Park is a three- to four-hour drive from Gross-Okandjou. In just under two hours, you’ll reach the Waterberg—a massive table mountain with a large game reserve on its plateau. Not far from there, you can admire Namibia’s genuine and only dinosaur tracks.
A tour through Damaraland, with its growing wildlife population, or an adventure safari to the Kaoko Field to visit one of Africa’s last nomadic tribes—the Himba—can also be undertaken from Gross-Okandjou. To do so, however, you’ll need the assistance of an experienced travel agency.
