The Wilderness
This Native American symbol for mountains bears a remarkable resemblance to the profile of Black Mountain, visible from Geronimo Trail Guest Ranch. Black Mountain is in the heart of the Gila Wilderness, which was the first designated wilderness in the United States.
The Gila and the Aldo Leopold Wildernesses together comprise over 750,000 acres. That is over 1000 square miles of some of the most beautiful, unspoiled country in the world - accessible right out our back door.
The wilderness areas in turn are located within the Gila National Forest, which at over 3 million acres is one of the largest tracts of public land in the country. No motorized vehicles in the wilderness, just horse and foot travel. Wildlife abounds, including Rocky Mountain elk, mule deer, bald eagles, blue jays, ravens, Mexican Gray wolves,
mountain lions, and black bear.

Additional information about the area

Excursions: Gila Cliff Dwellings
Gila Cliff Dwellings National Monument offers a glimpse of the homes and lives of the people of the Mogollon culture who lived in the Gila Wilderness from the 1280s through the early 1300s. The surroundings probably look today very much like they did when the cliff dwellings were inhabited. It is surrounded by the Gila National Forest and lies in the middle of the Gila Wilderness, the nation's first designated
wilderness area. Wilderness designation means that the wilderness character of the area will not be altered by the intrusion of roads or other evidence of human presence.
