2. region, region of antofagasta. The oasis of san Pedro de Atacama is situated 100km away from the miners town Calama (airport). You can reach the airport of Calama 5 or 6 times daily.
San Pedro de Atacama is imbedded by the Salt mountain range(Moon valley or Death Valley) and in the East by the Andes montain range with its spectacular vulcanoes reaching an altitude of almost 6000m. The Salar de Atacama (atacama salt flat), habitat of three flamingoe-species is situated in the direct neighborhood.
San Pedro owns a history of 12.000 years, which is approachable in rockpaintings, arqueological sites and mummies.
Today San Pedro is a touristic intersection for the access to the Andes, salt mountain range, vulcanoes, salt flat or lagoons. You can make your choice between the vivid San Pedro or the silence of the nature around the oasis.
