Mt Lyford is in the heart of the Pacific Alpine Triangle at the foothills of the Amuri Range, North Canterbury, South Island, NZ. It is at 1500 feet or 500 meters, and is on the main route between Hanmer Springs and Kaikoura, both in themselves popular tourist resorts.

Traveling by car:


It is easiest to have your own car. There is limited private transport available, and public transport to within 40 km of Mt Lyford.
A car is necessary

Traveling by plane:


Christchurch International Airport is 1.5 hours away and Sherwood Lodge will pick up guests from there. Otherwise cars are available for hire from here.

Traveling by train:


Train service goes to Kaikoura from Christchurch and Picton

Traveling by boat/ferry:


The Picton Ferry meets the train at the top of the South Island at Picton

Details of the Riding area


We cover hundreds of Kms of high trails in the foothills of the Amuri Range in North Canterbury through native beech forest and open tussock farmland. A round pen and riding area is used for teaching.

We are situated opposite Mt Lyford Lodge. We have accommodation available in our log cabin (sleeps 8)3 km from the treks which is all set amongst stunning mountain scenery.

1 Vacation home:


Our log cabin is made from local pondarosa pine. It has an efficient log fire, drying room, linen provided, all amenities, large bath, decks and views to the mountain. It is tastefully set out and set amongst native beech forest. You hear nothing but bird song and creek sound. It sleeps 2 to 8 comfortably, has one caport and other room for parking

Mt Lyford Lodge is NZ's largest log building, made of 4km of local douglas fur. At Mt Lyford Lodge there are 6 self contained units on the ground floor that sleep four and are fully serviced. They have Queen and single bunks with kitchenette and bathroom.

Upstairs at Mt Lyford Lodge are double rooms that have shared kitchen and bathroom facilities. Lovely views with lots of sun. Extra beds can be bought in.

Mt Lyford Lodge has three bunkrooms, one with 9 beds, and two with 12 beds. Shared bathroom and kitchen facilities, all centrally heated and comfortable.

Notes about the cost:


Riders who bring their own horses for trekking pay half the usual fee. We offer livery for $80.00 per week per horse. We have no stables but have a forested valley with a stream where the horses live.
